The application deadline has been extended until April 22nd, 2025.

Coherent optical communications systems form the backbone of the worldwide information and communications infrastructure. This summer school will be taught by three world-leading experts in this field and will cover hands-on experimental skills in coherent optical communications. It is co-located with the IEEE Summer Topicals and will take place from July 20th till 23rd 2025 in Berlin. Attendees of the summer school will have half-day classes and half-day presence at the conference to listen to talks of their choice and engage in discussions with the attendees.

Topics

  • Basic hardware building blocks of a coherent communications link (laser, modulator, coherent receiver, oscilloscope)
  • Implementation of coherent transmission systems using test equipment
  • Core blocks of digital signal processing
  • Signal quality measures
  • Analysis of sources of signal degradations

This summer school is intended for master students in electrical engineering or related fields that have initial experience with optical communications (passed lectures, taken lab class, etc.).

Thanks to generous sponsoring from NOKIA, attendees can receive partial funding towards travel and accommodation costs. Keysight and the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz Institute are supporting this event by providing technical equipment. NICT is kindly sponsoring event logistics. The IEEE Photonics Society will provide free registration to the IEEE Summer Topicals for attendees of the summer school.
