Subject

During my Diploma project I have developed an optical fiber amplifier. After that I remained in the field of Optics and worked towards my PhD thesis on liquid crystal based devices for optical communication.

The thesis Untersuchung von flüssigkristallbasierten Fabry-Pérot-Filtern und variablen Dämpfungsgliedern für die optische Nachrichtentechnik (ISBN: 978-3-8322-2348-9) was published by Shaker Verlag and can be purchared there.

The main focus was on tuneable Fabry-Perot filters. In addition variable optical attenuators based on polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) were investigated for the use as phase shifters in optically fed phased array antennas.

After my PhD I have been working in Freiburg at the Departement of Microsystems Engineering in the field of microactuators for one year. Back in Stuttgart I am again involved in optical communications. Besids the optical devices system aspects become more and more important. Integration, Efficiency and costs in manufacturing and Operation are some key words in this development.
