Subject

As part of the photonics group, I work on the design and metrological characterization of integrated components and systems for optical data transmission in Silicon on Insulator (SOI).

To achieve higher data rates, colleagues at the INT are working on fiber-based spatial multiplexing methods (space-division multiplexing, SDM). In AZUR, a project funded by BMFTR, photonic integrated circuits (PIC) will also be used in these SDM transmission systems to combine the signals from several single-mode fibers (SMF) into one multi-core fiber (MCF) or one few mode fiber (FMF).

The coupling, routing, and processing on the chip, especially due to the multimodality at the coupling interface and at the chip level, indicate new challenges and demands on design and measurement technology.
