Publication prize Faculty 5: "Ultra-Efficient Silicon-on-Insulator Grating Couplers with Backside Metal Mirrors"

January 28, 2021 / INT

Each year, the University of Stuttgart awards prizes for excellent publication from the university’s ten faculties.

Similar to electronic circuits, light processing structures, so called photonic devices, can be integrated onto Silicon chips with a small footprint. In all applications, e.g. for communications, sensing or quantum experiments, the critical point is a low-loss interface between the outside world and the chip. The optical interface is often realized by a simple planar diffraction grating. Typically, about 50% of the light is lost. In our publication, we present as a highlight a grating coupler with a measured coupling efficiency of 89%, which is the current world record at the wavelength of 1.55 µm. This became possible due to a special design and an adapted process technology. In addition, optical broadband and particularly compact modifications are presented. Notably the shown measurement values strengthen the importance of the research results, because higher efficiencies were simulated by other groups, but have not yet been experimentally demonstrated.
