The aim of the international symposium is to promote scientific exchange on the topic of “future fiber optic communication systems”. Optical communication systems form the backbone of the global information infrastructure. Data rates in optical networks have been increasing exponentially for many years. Most recently, the digitalization of work, education and leisure, which has been abruptly accelerated by the COVID-19 crisis, has led to a further surge in bandwidth requirements. In addition, technologies such as edge computing, networked mobility concepts and the sixth generation (6G) mobile communications standard, which is currently being defined, will drastically increase the demand for fiber optic transmission links with ultra-high capacity.
